Kick Ass Debut Movie Teaser Trailer

I’ll do my best not to attack the film; those that have seen it know it attacks plenty on its own.

From the opening scenes, two things become clear: 1) that this will be a dark comedy, and 2) you’re in no danger of being bored. The protagonist’s story begins in Dave Lizewski, a high school un-nerdy nerd (a relatable nobody). He desires to be somebody, and he’s a comic book fan. Stir those with a sense of altruism and a scuba suit and you’ve got Kick-Ass, the un-super hero (now a relatable but comical nobody). When he first takes crime fighting action against two men slim-jimming a car, reality strikes.

But then, unreality strikes. Hit Girl is the ‘real deal’. She’s an eleven-year-old cold-blooded murderer, I mean…super-hero. Brainwashed by Big Daddy (Nick Cage), she’s every bit as sympathizing as a malignant tumor. While played well by Chloe Moretz, I couldn’t bring myself to laugh at her glorified ass-kicking scenes reminiscent of a Kill Bill bloodbath. Is a brainwashed, violent, albeit gifted little girl chiming “what a douche” really comical? Entertaining? OK, sure. Spoiler warning: Wait ’til she’s nearly beaten to death.

People seem to praise it’s original, satirical and “pure entertainment” value. It certainly doesn’t make me feel pure if a little girl version of The Bride in Kill Bill is meant to entertain me. A spoiler to it’s originality: The nerd getting the gorgeous girl never ceases to “entertain” me. Nailing the English teacher would have been more plausible. In one redeeming scene, fully scuba-dressed Kick-Ass finds a lost cat posting and shamelessly takes the matter into his own hands. Now there’s a real super hero.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith 2005 Movie

The plot is equal parts “Undercover Blues”, “War of the Roses”, “True Lies”, and borrowings from “When Harry met Sally”, though this merely serves as a platform.

Pitt and Jolie dance right over this layer, practically floating, simultaneously giving us a movie performance and a comment on their own true life romance…the dance takes the form of both witty repartee and of obvious sexual charge. This is what makes the whole over-the-top absurdity work — all of their interaction occurs in a cinematic stratosphere. Much like their real lives; their current state of white-hot celebrity has them flying through a higher plane of existence.

The entire movie is their mutual wink at the audience — “look at us and how much fun this is!” Pitt confesses that he was married once before (nudge, nudge), and Jolie snippily demands the ex’s name and social security number.

This was all a good deal more sophisticated than it was advertised. We know we’re in for something special when we learn that home base is that stunning Colonial revival house. It serves as both setting and a way of narratively tying the first two acts together — that of a metaphor for the civilized veneer of their five (“Six!”) years of marriage, and for rekindling their passion when they ‘remodel’ it into the war zone where they first ‘caught fire’ together.

The movie is a clever exploitation of the couple-of-the-moment phenomenon, far better than most of these things turn out.

Knight and Day Movie

Want to see a fantastical action flick that works as entertainment…Don’t see The Expendables, see Knight And Day instead. Where the dark and ridiculous Sylvester Stallone summer action movie fails “Knight And Day” keeps it light, action-packed, and immensely entertaining.

I always have to get past Tom Cruise, well, just being Tom Cruise. I was able to do it with the WWII historical drama Valkyrie and now, I’m happy to report, I have been able to do likewise with “Knight And Day” which is a slightly different take on the old secret agent action/comedy. This unbelievable stuff demands to be delivered lightly with a “nod-and-a-wink”, that’s exactly how Tom Cruise presents himself here to wonderful comedic effect. We know he can do over-the-top action as his Mission Impossible franchise has demonstrated, and with this laid-back performance the viewer is entertained so well as to forget the utter ridiculous nature of his survival as well as, perhaps, the even more “out-there” protection of Cameron Diaz’s character. Who knew Tom Cruise was this good at light comedy? Bottom line: mere mortals would die within seconds yet these two escape whatever level of violence they are subjected to in creative and fun ways. Where I as a viewer was fed up with “The Expendables” because it was too much silliness while it plays itself as serious, “Knight And Day” never falls into that trap and is really fun.

I believe the whole movie rests on this lightness of the script that delivers constant well conceived action segments and the totally in-sync performances of Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz. Before seeing the movie I was thinking I wished the female role was anybody but Ms. Diaz, but after viewing I think her casting fit, she really contributes by nailing the tough, yet hysterical, female. If you get the feeling I was surprised overall with my pleasure you are correct. “Knight And Day” is a well executed summer “popcorn” action flick. The performances and the beautiful location cinematography augment a wild tale which is a fun ride indeed.

Nanny McPhee Returns (2010) Movie

Overall, this sequel is almost over the top and as usual for sequel, seemingly more dramatic, more spectacular, more impossible, and yet Emma Thompson’s script is in some ways even more compelling and more emotively intimate and powerful. The early scenes of various contraptions seems to take away the charm and seemingly gimmicky and yet Emma’s screenplay ties them together. The scene of London seems also to be overly fantastical and yet Emma’s writing never seems to definitely cross the boundaries of acceptability and fantasy.

This sequel is even more touching and powerful in its presentation of children and their issues, especially the the spoil boy and his father in one of the most carefully refined and strongest scenes. Maggie Gyllenhaal does a nice job in a character that doesn’t reflect her general starlet persona. While there are the usual stereotypical antics there seems to be an added flair to most. Overall while this movie is slightly a mixed bag, its presentation, its message, and the characters of the kids are both obnoxiously overly dramatic and yet again at the same time there’s some underlying restraint and dignified at the same making this sequel an improvement on the first in many places. An intelligent and highly above average movie for children.

Shrek Forever After Movie

Among one of my family favorites, I would have to say that the latest installment of Shrek, the Final Chapter was the most enjoyable. Great for all age ranges, this enchanting story applies the theory of be careful what you wish for, and enjoy what life has given you , in the fullest.

Our tale, as it begins, is Shrek and Fiona savoring the glory of their wedded bliss. Their trio of tykes are adorable, following in their father’s footsteps and inciting numerous giggles among the younger audience. Shrek, though, is unhappy. He begins to suffer from that quintessential male dilemma that he has lost himself in his wedded life, the frightening ogre now reduced to nothing more than a daddy and an overall lovable monster.

Even in this cartoon world, there is always someone who harbors ill will to our green hero. Rumplestilken makes an interesting foe, intent on granting one’s hearts desire for a simple little payment that is hidden in the fine print of his contracts. Shrek, downhearted as he is about his lost past, falls prey to the miniature devil in disguise. What happens next, in Shrek’s newly obtained world, is a surprise for everyone. I will have to admit that Antonio Banderas, again, steals the scene as Puss In Boots!

I would highly recommend this latest installment of Shrek to everyone that enjoys a good family movie.

The Sorcerer’s Apprentice – The Eagle Has Landed

I’ll admit, I’m tough on movies. With today’s budgets and technologies, movies should be good. Really good. Sadly, too many of them are just noisy and depressing (Iron Man 2), misfires (Alice in Wonderland) or just downright dumb (Clash of the Titans).

Oddly enough, though, two movies I’ve seen this summer have really impressed me, and both star Jay Baruchel (who had better enjoy his fifteen minutes). The first was How to Train Your Dragon, an excellent family film, and the second is The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, which I had pretty low expectations of and only went to see mainly because I’m a big fan of Nicolas Cage.

Mainstream reviews of the movie were lackluster at best, but this time, the critics really missed the boat. This movie is a riot–big and noisy, true, but with a wonderful sense of humor and a definite ability not to take itself too seriously. The cast is nearly perfect, with Alfred Molina clearly enjoying himself as Horvath (the Bad Guy).

One of the joys of a movie like this is watching real professionals at work, and Cage and Molina make worthy adversaries, alternately blasting and taunting each other. Of course the music of Paul Dukas make an obligatory appearance in a sequence that I thought was a mere throwaway, but actually has a point that becomes clear later in the film…a nice touch indeed.

The movie looks great, moves well, has some genuine laughs, and makes me want to see it again. A great time to be had by all!

The Twilight Saga Eclipse Movie Online

Eclipse is by far the better movie. I hated Twilight and actually fell asleep the first time I saw it because it moved so slowly and the characters weren’t as well defined as they are in the book. I did decide to take another look when it came to cable and decided it wasn’t the actors who trashed the movie but the director and screenwriter. The actors were uncomfortable and awkward in the movie because that’s how they were depicted in the books. Everyone. Charlie and Bella weren’t physically affectionate. Bella was an outsider in AZ, therefore felt awkward in Forks. Edward was afraid he’d kill Bella and felt physical pain when he was near her because he wanted to kill her. So after re-watching it, I got it, but it was not translated to the screen how/why Bella and Edward were so passionate about each other.

Fast forward to New Moon and Eclipse. Thank goodness they got new people behind the scenes because the movies began to improve. Edward was a bit more emotional in Eclipse than he should’ve been with Jacob. Jacob, in the books is a bit immature and silly and Edward is, afterall 109+ so he’s more of a grown-up. He’s more in control. They really need to work on Edward and Bella’s passionate scenes. These two should be slobbering all over each other and breathing heavy until Edward comes to his senses and pushes Bella away. That’s what you got from the books, but it’s not intense in the movies as it should be.

Hopefully all that pent up angst will be shown in Breaking Dawn and not PG as it was in the books. Bella and Edward should get down and dirty and show more passion for each other. Afterall, Bella has been lusting for Edward and so have we. Give us what we want!!!

Avatar Trailer The Movie

There are many low score reviews purely based on the fact there was a release of this movie earlier this year and now the extended version comes out feels like a marketing game. When the first release happened it was known an extended version was coming, but some people just had to have it now. I just watched it on Netflix and waited for the extended version. I agree if you bought the first release version you have little real reason to buy the extended version, unless you love this movie and want the bonus features.

Some of the other low scores talk about the 3D version coming, but that is weak reason for most people because most do not own and will not own a 3D TV set. If you do your research on 3D TVs you will find they clunky and costly. Unless you are among the few who have a 3D TV, then there is no reason to wait to buy this release of Avatar if you enjoyed the movie.

For the few who have never seen the movie, the key factors to consider is if you are a science fiction fan, enjoy action movies, and if you consider yourself picky about dialog/originality, Avatar breaks no new ground when it comes to story, but it does take many of successful elements from other stories and rolls it into this one. The bashing on acting is overkill. In general they did a fine job, not exceptional, but anyone who loves science fiction will find the acting a step above the normal for this type of movie. The dialog is nothing special. There are mostly cliche characters and situations. The key is the entire package is very well done. No movie is perfect and as much as some people bash this, just look at the box office sales. Bad movies would have never set top sales records no matter how much marketing was behind it. This movie is not for everyone, but it is good to great entertainment for many.

BOTTOM LINE: If you loved the movie and do not own it, you might want to get this. If you have never seen the movie, rent it or barrow it first. It is a science fiction classic worth consideration for most people.
